On Motherhood and Style

By Bianca Jamieson

Motherhood has taught me many valuable life lessons about unconditional love, patience– and the importance of function in fashion.  As my body and lifestyle have changed through pregnancies, nursing, and life with toddlers so too has my sense of style.

When I was first pregnant, I was excited to celebrate my growing bump but I also quickly realized I wanted to be comfortable.  I remember feeling particularly hot and swollen that summer and buckling my sandals at nine months pregnant was next to impossible.  Breezy sundresses and slip-on sandals all the way!

In my experience, dressing after giving birth was even harder than dressing my pregnant body.  I REALLY wanted to get back to my old clothes and just feel put together. But my body was healing and I still REALLY wanted to be comfortable.  I was also nursing and that required a certain level of accessibility from my clothing. Apart from being kind and forgiving to myself during that time, I found it worthwhile to invest in a rotation of  button-up shirts for layering over nursing tank tops and some soft, comfortable pants.

I’m now settling into life as a mom of two busy little ones.  There are sticky fingers and games of leap frog and a host of other reasons why I can’t wear silk shirts, short dresses or high heels the way I once did.  That’s ok. Being comfortable is great. Being able to throw your clothes in the washing machine is also very convenient. Plus, I move much faster wearing flat shoes.
