Shop B’s Spring Style Tips- Part #1

by Bianca Jamieson

There are changes afoot.   It’s not just the seasons, it’s the proportions.

We’re seeing styles shift toward cropped, high-waisted jeans, boxier tops, and wide-leg pants.  It’s all incredibly chic and minimalist but “spring” in this part of the world is not always ideal for an exposed ankle or a breezy (drafty) pant leg.

However, there are ways to capture the spirit of the season without catching a chill.  Michele recently helped me figure out what true transition dressing really means and I can’t wait to share these tips with you.

This week, we’re slooowly easing into spring blouses by layering them over turtlenecks.  It’s a great way to ditch the wool sweaters before the snow officially melts and the temperatures allow for flowy tops.  A thin turtleneck works under a jumpsuit too!

Here’s the inspiration:

And here’s how I wore it:

This very simple little styling change was the perfect step forward into the new season.  My wardrobe felt fresh. I felt warm. It was a good day

Stay tuned next week for seem more inspiration on how to wear a cropped pant on a cold day!

Shop B celebrates International Women’s Day

inside Shop B

By Bianca Jamieson

On this International Women’s Day, Shop B is giving a special shout out to all of the wonderful ladies who support the store and make this business feel like a community.  International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action- the kind of stuff I see all the time at Shop B.

I’ve been working and/or shopping at the store for over 14 years and throughout that time I’ve witnessed every range of emotion around those changerooms.  I’ve helped at least one woman through the excitement of choosing an outfit to wear to their own bridal shower. I’ve helped others try on shoes while they cried over a breakup.   I have seen countless more share news of their pregnancies, promotions, or their kid’s graduations while Michele jumped for joy along with them. More than once, I have gone in to Shop B feeling stuck in a bit of a rut and, after talking it out with Michele and whoever else happened to be in the store, left feeling uplifted and inspired.

This kind of connection and community is made possible because of women supporting other women.  There is a special kind of magic that comes from advocating for one another and that is certainly worth celebrating.

Happy International Women’s Day everyone!

Speaking of supporting other women, here’s a quick list of some others who are inspiring us these days:

Reading:  Becoming by Michelle Obama (Obviously!)

Listening: Skimm’d from the Couch  (A career advice podcast that features inspiring interviews with female leaders like Katie Couric and the founder of Man Repeller, Leandra Medine)

Watching: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel  (A very funny, stylish show that’s worth the Amazon Prime membership)

Following: Garance Doré (We didn’t think we could love her more until she showed up on the cover of Domino magazine in a yellow jumpsuit and showed off her amazing L.A. house)

Two Words… Cute outfit!

dot top,wideleg pants, runners

Happy Wednesday! The sun is shining into the shop today and giving us high hopes for Spring weather to soon follow. Fingers crossed!

We are unpacking new spring pieces weekly.. so you can imagine all the goodness! We are super excited for fresh new looks.. so we are sharing a cute one with you.

We are loving the wideleg pant.. slightly cropped.. great paired with a taller bootie now. In warmer weather team them up with white leather runners or a sweet sandal.

The pant is also high waisted.. which is super flattering and tres comfy.

(Style tip)  Tuck the front of your top into the front of the pant… it shows off your waist.

Who’s ready for Spring?

Happy Valentine’s day Lovelies!

Shop B’s Favourite Movies about Love

by Bianca Jamieson

Maybe it’s the polar vortex, maybe it’s because it’s Valentine’s day, heck-maybe I’m just a romantic at heart, but these days, all I want to do is immerse myself in hygge and watch rom-coms on the couch. Who’s with me?

We asked some of our Shop B friends about their romantic movie of choice and put together a list of some comedy classics and modern day tear-jerkers to keep you feeling all warm and fuzzy during the season of love.

When Harry Met Sally – (Ali’s Pick) This is the rom-com gold standard. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s witty banter is the best. It was brilliantly written by Nora Ephron and , 30 years later, the story about whether men and women can ever really be friends still feels genuine and relatable. Great Quotable Moment “At that moment, I knew. I knew the way you know about a good melon.”

Crazy, Stupid Love – (Bianca’s pick) OMG (oh my Gosling). This is peak Ryan Gosling in terms of charm, and being shirtless. But yet, even his abdominal muscles aren’t enough to steal the show in this one.  Emma Stone, Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore are equally wonderful in this cross-generational romance that reminds us that love is all around. Great Quotable Moment -“I met my soulmate when I was fifteen years old and I’ve loved her every day since I first bought her that mint chocolate chip cone.”

The Notebook -(Michele’s pick) No list of notable romance movies would be complete without this one.  If you love love and you love a good cathartic cry, this might just be your movie. It’s an epic love story that is equal parts forbidden love, missed connections (he wrote her everyday!!) and just being soulmates. The ending gets us EVERY. TIME.  Great Quotable Moment -“I think our love can do anything we want it to.”

About Time – (Cami’s pick) We heart Rachel McAdams. This is a sweet story about a guy who inherits the ability to travel back in time to make sure he ‘gets it right’. It’s a British film with a great message about living and loving life to the fullest. Rachel McAdams could not be any sweeter but we adore the father/son relationship in this one. Great Quotable Moment – “I’d only give one piece of advice to anyone marrying. We’re all quite similar in the end. We all get old and tell the same tales too many times. But try and marry someone kind. “

The Age of Adaline – (Emily’s pick)  The Age of Adeline is about a woman who is destined to remain 29 years old forever. Now, It’s hard to imagine a downside to looking like Blake Lively and being 29 indefinitelty but, when it comes to matters of the heart, there are some obstacles for this Adaline character. It’s a dreamy looking movie with an old-Hollywood feel and a couple of very handsome actors (Harrison Ford and Michiel Huisman).  There’s a particualary touching scene where she reflects on all the dogs she’s had in her life and you know Shop B is all for that shout out to pet-owner love! Great Quotable Moment – “Some place you’ve never been” (Swoon! Trust us)

Pretty Woman – (Gayle & Carley’s pick)  All hail the queen of the rom-com, Julia Roberts. We’re closing out our list with this cinematic icon of the 90’s where a Hollywood call girl meets a wealthy businessman (Richard Gere) and the rest is history. There’s a makeover scene, there’s a funny, quirky roommate, and there’s Julia Roberts’ laugh.  It’s one you can watch over and over again. It just doesn’t get tired.  Great Quotable Moment – “Big mistake. Big. Huge.  I have to go shopping now. ”

What are some of your favourite romantic or romantic-comedies? We would love to hear from you in the comments!
